There are all sorts of NFT programs and collections floating about the internet, many of which are promoted by celebrities and influencers. However, not all are properly vetted and buyers are not always informed of the fact that their favorite celebrity has been paid to promote it to them. This was reinforced through a recent experiment by YouTuber Coffeezilla who revealed that he had paid MMA fighter Dillion Danis 1000 dollars to promote a fake NFT scheme.
How the Experiment Worked
In a February 3, 2023 tweet, Coffeezilla revealed that he had reached out to the fighter to promote an NFT collection.
We just tricked Dillon Danis into promoting a fake NFT project. We paid him $1,000 to post, he didn’t disclose it was an #AD, and posted copy that literally spells out S.C.A.M. 💀💀 pic.twitter.com/SVo2SCoN9q

He also explained that anyone who ‘minted’ the NFT would be taken to a URL that listed out the various scams that Danis has allegedly been involved in over time. Most of these were crypto schemes that he had promoted to his audience over the years and tried to remove from his social media.
Highlighting the lack of due diligence practiced by Danis, the FAQ of the project he advertised says that users will not actually get any assets. Coffeezilla has said that he will make a follow-up video regarding this incident and cautioned people against buying any schemes promoted by public figures without doing their own research.
