Crypto is in the red today, but why? Here’s what’s moving the market.
Why is crypto down today?
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the UN General Assembly yesterday.
He said,
(Iran) will never bow our head or bend at the knee…
He went on to add that the country is still open to talks, just “without accepting the language of force.”
He rejected terrorism accusations, and reasoned that Iran had only acted in self-defence. Things got worse when, in return, he accused the US of violence against civilians.
The American delegation reportedly walked out soon after.
Traders prepared for a tiff between both countries, and the markets slid. Conflict in the region means higher oil prices, and costlier oil means inflation.
As a consequence, traders moved away from riskier assets.
Nearly $400 million wiped out!
The total crypto market has lost about $92 billion since early Wednesday. That’s a fall of about 3.2%, and at the time of writing, we were at $2.82 trillion.

Bitcoin [BTC] also fell from grace in the last day. It dropped about 3.4% to $83,512. The first cryptocurrency briefly fell to $82,900 on Thursday morning before picking itself up again.

Traders betting on a surge felt the brunt of it all. CoinGlass data showed that about $399.5 million in positions were liquidated in the past 24 hours. About $297 million of that came from longs.

More than 92,000 traders got caught out. The single largest liquidation was an $11.48 million Ethereum [ETH] position.
AMBCrypto previously reported that CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju expects this Bitcoin cycle to deliver a 3-5x move. With BTC near $86K at the time, that put his target between $258K and $430K.
But why? He says big money should help the 80% crashes of earlier cycles, but it also caps the upside. If he’s right, dips like this are the sign of a maturing market.
For now, the market is eagle-eyed about Washington’s next move. Until US-Iran tensions cool, prices will probably go sideways.
Final Summary
- The crypto market lost $92 billion following Iran’s UN speech.
- Bitcoin fell 3.4%, and $400 million in positions were liquidated.
